Day 5 of 7
CARL JUNG'S GUIDED MEDITATION: ENCOUNTERING THE WISE OLD MAN/WOMAN
"In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order."
— Carl Jung
The Archetype of Wisdom
In Jungian psychology, the Wise Old Man and Wise Old Woman archetypes represent inner wisdom, guidance, and spiritual insight. Today's meditation guides you to encounter this powerful archetypal energy—often appearing as a sage, wizard, elder, guru, or crone figure—that can help illuminate your path toward wholeness.
For Jung, these figures embody the accumulated wisdom of the collective unconscious and serve as bridges to higher knowledge and meaning. Unlike the shadow or anima/animus, which often represent aspects we've rejected or not yet integrated, the Wise Old Man/Woman represents the potential for integration and wholeness that already exists within the psyche.

Meditation Instructions
- 1. Returning to Your Inner WorldBegin by finding a comfortable position and closing your eyes. Take several deep breaths to center yourself. Use your established method to return to your sacred inner space, then follow the descent pathway into the deeper layers of your unconscious, crossing the familiar threshold.
- 2. The Path to WisdomOnce across the threshold, you may notice a new path emerging—one that leads to a different region of your inner landscape. This path may appear as a mountain trail, forest way, desert road, or any other form that suggests a journey to a place of higher perspective or deeper insight. Begin following this path with awareness and intention.
- 3. The Place of WisdomAs you follow the path, you'll eventually arrive at a special place that feels ancient and imbued with wisdom. This might be a mountain peak, temple, cave, library, grove, or any other setting that embodies wisdom and perspective in your personal symbology. Take time to observe and absorb the qualities of this place.
- 4. Inviting the Wise OneIn this special place, express your intention to meet a figure of wisdom—your inner Wise Old Man or Wise Old Woman. You might simply state: "I am open to meeting my inner wisdom figure." Allow an image, form, or presence to emerge that represents this archetypal energy.
- 5. The EncounterNotice how your Wise One appears. What are their qualities, demeanor, and energy? How do they greet you? What is your intuitive sense of their nature and character? Allow yourself to feel the full presence of this archetypal figure.
- 6. Receiving GuidanceBegin a dialogue with your Wise One. You might ask: "What wisdom do you have for me at this time in my life?" or "What do I need to understand about my current challenges?" Listen deeply to their response, which may come as words, symbols, feelings, or intuitive knowing.
- 7. A Question of Your ChoosingNow bring forward a specific question or challenge you're facing in your life. Ask your Wise One for insight or guidance on this matter. Allow yourself to receive their wisdom, which may come in unexpected forms—perhaps a story, riddle, symbol, or direct instruction.
- 8. Receiving a TalismanBefore concluding your encounter, ask your Wise One if they have a gift or talisman to offer you—a symbolic object that represents their wisdom and can serve as a connection to them in your daily life. Receive this offering with gratitude, noticing its qualities and significance.
- 9. Return JourneyExpress gratitude to your Wise One for their guidance. Ask if there's a way you can contact them again when needed. Then begin your journey back, returning along the path, recrossing the threshold, and ascending to your sacred space. Carry with you the guidance and talisman you received. When ready, gradually return to ordinary awareness.
Reflection Questions
After completing the meditation, consider these questions:
- What form did your Wise One take? What qualities or characteristics did they embody?
- What was the nature of the wisdom or guidance they offered?
- How did their response to your specific question resonate with you?
- What was the talisman or gift they offered, and what might it symbolize?
- How might you apply the wisdom received in your daily life?
- What qualities of the Wise One might you develop more fully in yourself?
Jungian Context
Jung identified the Wise Old Man and Wise Old Woman (sometimes called the Senex and Crone) as powerful archetypes representing the Self's capacity for wisdom, meaning, and spiritual insight. These figures often appear in dreams, myths, and religious narratives as guides, teachers, healers, or prophets who help the hero on their journey.
For Jung, encountering these wisdom figures represents a significant stage in the individuation process—one that often comes after confronting the shadow and anima/animus. These archetypes help us access the deeper resources of the collective unconscious and connect with the organizing center of the psyche that Jung called the Self. They offer guidance that transcends rational knowledge, drawing on the accumulated wisdom of human experience and the transpersonal dimensions of consciousness. By developing a conscious relationship with these inner figures, we gain access to intuitive wisdom that can guide us through life's complexities and challenges.
